Amsterdam Center is small enough that its residents think of it as a village, but it can be one confusing village until you get the hang of it. It's easy to think you are headed in one direction along the canal ring, only to discover that you are going completely the other way. Those concentric rings of major canals are the city's defining characteristic, along with several important squares that act as focal points.
